The Polk Fellowships program will support 24 fellows over a span of two years, working with the local community/ showcasing their work at the Polklore Micro-Museum to preserve culture and integrate new quality-of-life objectives in the Martindale Brightwood neighborhood.

Anderson and I were the very first Fellows of the program.

Throughout the 4 weeks of our Polk Fellowship, we were tasked with: contributing to the installation of the museum, interact with neighbors to learn their stories & specifically search for the Hispanic/ Latino community which is 5% of the population in the Martindale Brightwood area.
My husband is a professional soccer player from Venezuela who does not yet speak English so it was really interesting to watch him interact with people at the Harrison Center, the Polk museum and the neighborhood in general. Witnessing these interactions has confirmed to me that kindness and care transcend language and cultural barriers.

Yesterday I got to visit my painting series: “First Encounter with Snow” at the new Eskenazi Health Center Grande Campus!! This piece forms part of the permanent collection & it so cool to be a part of something that will stand the test of time in the city of Indianapolis. The building provides a beautiful and healing atmosphere with accessible care for people in this city.

Thank you to @60oncenter for curating/ bringing together this groups of artistas making this collection a reality.

Also Shout out to our lovely tour guide.. she was sooo funny!! 🤣🤣❤️

Such a wonderful experience to participate in the World Arts Expo and getting to meet so many talented artists from all parts of the world. The exhibition includes 63 artists who all together represent 22 countries! I’m so proud to form a part of this group and to be a tiny representation of Venezuela anywhere I go.

✨Hallacas✨

It’s crazy how the smell and taste of hallacas are so associated with Christmas memories. This traditional Christmas/ new years dish is one that I’ve been blessed to eat every year and reminds me how traditions are so interconnected with cultures

This traditional Venezuelan dish is often compared to the tamale. Corn flour dough dyed with onoto & filled with a stew of beef, pork and chicken… all wrapped in plantain leaves. (Everyone & every region has their own recipe)

Ironically one of my goals for this year was to stop procrastinating & stop being lazy. Unconsciously & thankfully I’ve been changing this at the last minute.
